Onix is a good choice against Electric types, but it can also be worthwhile against Poison, Rock, Normal, Flying and Fire Pokémon. If you're facing Electric, Poison or Rock opponents, use Dig, Earthquake or similar Ground attacks (you can also use them against Fire types to great effect). In battle, use Rock Slide or Rock Throw against Fire, Ice, Flying or Bug Pokemon. On the other hand, moves like Earthquake and Dig are super-effective against Fire, Electric, Poison and even fellow Rock types. Many Ground Pokémon are helpless when facing a Flying type (Ground techniques can't hit Flying Pokémon), but thanks to Onix's Rock attacks, you can instantly squash any Flying opposition. While Onix doesn't learn Rock Slide on its own you can (and should) use TM 48 to teach it this powerful technique. Sadly, there are only two Rock techniques in Blue, Red or Yellow - Rock Throw (decent) and Rock Slide (good). You just need to know which types to stay away from and you'll be fine. Rock attacks are great against Fire, Ice, Flying and Bug Pokémon, but the type also adds a few weaknesses to Onix's Ground abilities. To make things worse, it learns no Ground techniques and only one Rock technique on its own. That's not really a problem for Onix's great HP and Defense, but the creature's Attack, Speed and most importantly, Special stats could have used some serious improvements.

The biggest problem with Onix is that it never evolves into a more powerful form (until Gold/Silver, that is) and thus never gets a stats boost. I admit that Onix is an interesting creature - but it just can't keep up with many of the other Rock and Ground types, like Golem and Aerodactyl. Tips: Like all Rock Pokémon in Blue/Red and Yellow, Onix is a dual type. LV 01 - Tackle LV 01 - Screech LV 15 - Bind This Pokémon naturally learns the following techniques: Just look for it in the Rock Tunnel or on Victory Road and you're almost guaranteed to bump into this massive creature. Locations: Onix isn't terribly hard to track down. The tunnels it leaves are used as homes by Digletts.
